About The Role:
The Fire Life Safety Director is responsible for developing, implementing, and supervising fire safety and emergency response programs. This role leads the day-to-day operations of all safety functions, ensuring that all personnel and tenants are trained in fire evacuation and emergency protocols. Your work will be vital to safeguarding both life and property.
 
Working onsite in New York City, NY USA.
 
 
What You'll Do:
  • Review present Fire Life Safety Director (FLSD) site program and emergency response(s) to both fire and non-fire emergencies in a large complex site to ensure it is providing a safe environment for employees, team members and commuters. Make modifications to existing plan(s) and bring up to client for review as approval.
  • Evaluate current personnel, resources and equipment to ensure optimal protection of life and property at the site.
  • Regulatory Compliance & Advisory: Must have an in-depth knowledge of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards in particular NFPA-72 Fire Alarm and NFPA 25-inspection, testing and maintenance of water-based fire protection systems. Knowledge of Fire Department-City of New York (FDNY) codes and – Quality Assurance Division (QAD) client authority having jurisdiction. 
  • Coordinate with sitewide contracted vendors including but not limited to fire alarm(s), sprinkler-standpipe, preaction, FM200 to ensure all code required inspection, testing and maintenance is coordinated. Confirm all necessary FLSD and engineering / electrical (as needed) support scheduled. Confirm all testing and repair documentation is recorded in client – Maximo database. 
  • Direct supervision of two direct reports and oversight of approximately thirty contracted Fire Life Safety Teams members who provide 24x7 coverage. 
  • Ensure code required brigade training of all Fire Life Safety Team members, and fire and non-fire emergency drills for employees is coordinated. 
  • Review and revise (as-needed) Fire Life Safety Standard Operating Procedures. 
  • Annual review and make necessary revisions and updates to combined FDNY – Fire Safety & Emergency Action Plans. 
  • Senior member of the Operations Command Team in the event of an emergency including but not limited to a Fire or Non-Fire Emergency impacting the site. 
  • Coordinate with Chief Engineer and/or Electrical Team to ensure necessary counsel the Fire Life Safety (FLS) team, Operations Command Center, property management, and engineering staff on regulatory updates and their implications.
  • Act as one of the primary points of contact for First Responders including FDNY, PAPD and NYPD regarding fire and non-fire emergences. 
  • Review sitewide Property Management (work-tickets) to ensure proper notification of fire systems are bypassed to reduce unwarranted fire alarm activations. Communicate with collaborators when inspection, testing and maintenance is scheduled to reduce business interruption. 
  • Maintain direct reports training and performance. 
  • Emergency Procedures & SOPs: Collaborate with property and engineering management teams to establish and refine emergency procedures and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Other duties as directed to support the property’s fire safety and emergency response needs.

  • Minimum of an associate's degree, bachelors degree preferred. Five years of experience in fire safety program administration and supervision for a large complex or high-rise building.
  • Prior firefighting, law enforcement or military experience is a plus.
 
  • Following FDNY Certificates of Fitness strongly encouraged:
  • F-89 Fire Life Safety Director License 
  • S-12 Citywide Sprinkler Systems
  • S-14 Standpipe for multi-zone systems
 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to present information clearly and confidently to diverse audiences.
  • Analytical & Organizational Skills: Strong organizational abilities and analytical skills to assess complex situations and develop effective solutions.
  • Self-motivated individual to conduct frequent sitewide inspections to understand complex fire alarm, suppression systems. 
  • Customer Service & Problem-Solving: Proven track record to deliver exceptional customer service, solve problems efficiently, and handle multiple priorities effectively. 
  • Communicate on a regular basis with senior client management team members and various collaborators. 
  • Financial Literacy: Basic understanding of financial terms, budgeting principles, and an ability to calculate simple figures such as percentages.
  • Technical Proficiency: Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook, and the internet. Ability to learn and operate site-specific fire systems and applications.
  • Decision-Making & Independence: Able to make informed decisions with a deep understanding of procedures and company policies, while managing your own project timelines.
